Helpful Hints for Netbooks
Updated 9/18/09
1. These Netbooks are wireless and will find available networks in your area. You will need a wireless router at home to use on the Internet (that is Internet Explorer on this) or to print.
2. The log in is Teacher with the generic teacher password.
3. There is NO CD drive. You will not be able to install anything from a disc, play music or watch movies.
4. We have installed Open Office for using Word, Excel or PowerPoint. They are linked to the Start Menu and you can chose from there. This DOES NOT require a network connection UNLESS you want to print something. You can work on files at home and bring it in to school to print.
NEW: 4a. If you are going to use the document on any computer that does not have Open Office you should save the file
using the "Save as" feature and choose to save it as a Word document or Excel doc and have the proper
extenstion (that is .doc or .xls)
5. There is only 1 printer installed on this netbook. If you need a home printer installed you will have to do that yourself. If you need another school printer installed send in a Tech Request.
6. Smartboard programs are installed. You can create lessons from anywhere and bring it in. When you need to use on the Smartboard/Vista computer bring the netbook in to school, connect to the network and Staff Folders, copy your file there and use from that location.
7. You may run updates when the netbook prompts you to do so with ONE EXCEPTION. This is very important so please read this carefully. The New STI Information Now has a bug in it that will not allow you to print anything if you have Internet Explorer 8. These netbooks DO NOT. So, when running updates make sure to click on the CUSTOM INSTALL instead of Express. Unclick if you see Internet Explorer 8 and only install security updates and XP updates. *****This is important until further notice!! Thanks!
If you have any questions or concerns it is better to see Deb or Pat first before trying something on your own.
