ATTENDANCE

Students are required by law to be in school during the hours school is in session. It is important to be present each day in order to maintain a high level of achievement. Absences caused by personal illness, quarantine, religious holidays, or emergencies are excused. Whenever your child is absent or is going to be tardy, please call our 24-hour answering machine:  973-383-8844. Upon returning to school after any absence, the student must present a note of explanation signed by the parent or guardian. We may request a doctor’s note for absences in excess of three days. Chronic absences will be investigated by the school nurse and/or the chief school administrator. If a student is absent more than 18 days, parents will be contacted by the administration. A conference to discuss attendance may be requested. There will be no awards for Perfect Attendance. We believe this places an unnecessary burden on students to come to school when they are not well and we do not want to encourage this practice.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Letters will be sent to parents of students after the 10th, 15th, and 20th cumulative absence, followed by a telephone call to discuss the absences, unless you have sent in notes for each absence. Parents who plan to cause students to be absent for extended vacations or family vacations must send in a written notice to the administrator prior to the event.  They will be informed that such absences are unexcused and the school district cannot condone such absences.

Assignments missed during such absences must be made up upon the student's return to school.  He/she will have one day of make-up time for each day absent.  Teachers are not required to give assignments in advance of the student's vacation.  All incomplete work not in within the make-up time will receive an incomplete and could result in a lower grade if such assignments for the students in attendance were graded by the teacher for the current marking period.

MISSING CHILDREN

When a child is absent or going to be late  from school, the parent/guardian is asked to call the school nurse (383-8844) and give the reason for their child(ren)'s absence or tardiness and for how long a period of time.  If the school does not hear from the parent/guardian or know the reason a student is absent, a phone call will be made to contact the emergency alternates listed at school.  If it is suspected that a child is missing after conferring with all parties concerned, contact will be made immediately with the State Police as to what appropriate procedure they will follow and what coordinating action the parent/guardian must take to assist all the agencies that will become involved in locating their missing child.  When a child is reported missing, immediate action is taken and all resources available are used.

TARDINESS

Students who are late to school (after 8:35 a.m.) should report directly to the Nurse’s Office for a late pass. The late arrival will be noted on the attendance slip and the student will then report to class. If a student should miss a bus, it is the parent’s responsibility to see that the student arrives to school on time. If a school bus arrives late, the students will not be counted as being tardy. Chronic tardiness may affect the student's academic progress and should be avoided.
